Svetla Trifonova Marinova is Professor of International Business and Marketing. Her research focuses on the internationalization of emerging economies and firms, the role of context, and the interplay between institutional and business entrepreneurship in promoting outward foreign direct investment. Svetla has co-authored (with Czinkota, Ronkainen, Moffett and Marinov) the first European edition of an international business textbook, International Business: European Edition, published in 2009 by John Wiley and Sons. She has edited the book Institutional Impacts on Firm Internationalization published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2014; co-authored the book Corporate Foresight and Strategic Decisions: Lessons from a European Bank (with Portaleoni, ul-Haq and Marinov); co-edited (with Marin Marinov) five books, Foreign Direct Investment in Central and Eastern Europe in 2003, The Changing Nature of Doing Business in Transition Economies and Internationalization of Emerging Economies and Firms in 2011, Emerging Economies and Firms in the Global Crisis and Impacts of Emerging Economies and Firms on International Business in 2012; co-edited (with Larimo and Nummela) two books on Value Creation in International Business: An MNE Perspective and Value Creation in International Business: An SME Perspective in 2016, published by Palgrave Macmillan. Dr Marinova has published more than 110 journal articles on internationalisation, Central and Eastern Europe, emerging markets, inward and outward foreign direct investment, entrepreneurship and institutions. She has published in European Journal of Marketing, International Marketing Review, Thunderbird International Business Review, Advances in International Management, Advances in International Marketing, Journal of Global Marketing, Journal of Euro-marketing, Journal of East-West Business, and Revista Faces, among others. She was also Guest Editor of the Journal of Euro-marketing, European Journal of Marketing (with Paliwoda) and International Marketing Review (with Carrigan and Szmigin).
Currently, Svetla Marinova is part of the Global SME Internationalisation Network (SINET), leading the Danish participation in the Network. The project studies the role of network attachments and decision-making in the internationalisation of SMEs and involves partners from the UK, China, UAE, Egypt, Poland, Taiwan, and India.
Apart from her degrees from her native Bulgaria, Svetla Marinova holds MBA from Warwick University in the UK and PhD from Copenhagen Business School in Denmark. She is also Trainer of Management Trainers.
Svetla Marinova is passionate about teaching and helping students achieve their potential. She has supervised 13 Doctoral students, who have completed successfully, and acted as External Examiner/Oponent of 11 Doctoral Candidates across Europe and the USA. She continues to supervise a number of PhD and DBA students. Dr Marinova was formerly Director of the MSc in International Business programme, Coordinator of the MSc International Business Economics and MSc International Marketing at Aalborg University and has experience from positions in research committees, doctoral committees and student welfare. She has developed creative and innovative taught programmes and courses that enhance the reflective and analytical skills of students.
In 2013, the Faculty of Social Sciences nominated Professor Svetla Marinova for Teacher of the Year at Aalborg University.
